Pamukkale literally means “cotton castle” in Turkish. The area is a natural site in Denizli province, in southwastern part of Turkey. Pamukkale is famous for its snow-white limestone terraces made of travertine, shaped over millennia left by the flowing water. The area was drawing visitors for to its thermal springs since classical periods.
The ancient city of Hierapolis was built on top of the Pamukkale. Hierapolis literally means “Holy City”. About the origin of the city we doesn’t have enough information. Hierapolis was founded as a thermal spa in Hellenistic period.
In Hierapolis Museum exibited artifacts from Hierapolis, Laodiceia, Colossae and other towns of the Lycos valley. In addition we have a large section of artifacts found at Beycesultan, Caria, Pisidia and Lydia regions are also on display in this museum.
Pamukkale and Hierapolis was declared a World Heritage Site in 1988.
